Why are SF black holes only destructive when you intend them to be -- otherwise, entering one will transport you unharmed to some distant place and/or time?

I had the same objection watching the recent Star Trek remake, in which black holes are used both ways in a matter of an hour with no explanation.

Just saw ST again very recently, which is what brought the question to mind. You have nailed it as a primo example...
