something I am grateful for today

This mornin's dental freezing had side effects which were milder and briefer than I had expected.

new comic: status update

OK, so I took last Friday off work, in part so that I could break out my India ink and finish at least one of my pencilled pages. Ended up being an interesting experience for several reasons...

- after laying down a few lines, I found myself thinking This linework is not as good as I would like it to be.
- after laying down a few more lines, I was forced to admit This linework is about as good as my linework ever was... in other words, I never was as good an inker as I would like to be. But, if I'm being brutally honest, I wanted to get back into shape drawing-wise, and by now I pretty much am.
- I went into this knowing that I would be doing some of my finished work on computer -- e.g., lettering. (For those of you who are curious, I use Paint Shop Pro 7. I also own 8 but still find it easier working with 7...) So, before I finished my first page, I thought that I might as well also use PSP to fill in my large black areas rather than waste ink doing it. Then I also thought that I could use PSP to do gray fills rather than do hatching. So basically I ended up doing half my inking with a nib and half of it with a PC. The final product has a smooth glossiness to it which looks quite different to my earlier works, but it's a gloss that I think suits the subject matter this time, so I'm reasonably happy with it.

Bottom line: over the weekend I finished two pages. (For me that's fantastically productive and quick.) Now pencilling page three -- I think it's safe to say this comic is officially under way!
