Still, I think Lucas wrote that line not for Luke's world, but for ours -- knowing that "trust your feelings" is a message people in our world desperately want to hear and believe. Certainly the Sarah Palin crowd wants to hear it today.
"Trust your feelings" is a great way to decide simple, risk-free things like what to have for lunch. Unfortunately, it doesn't work very well for tasks involving many decisions and branching possibility trees and complex ramifications (i.e., life). And as a species we seem pretty bad at distinguishing between the two.
