a) explore space, and create intrastellar colonies into which we can expand, than
b) persuade people to stop using up the Earth's limited resources and doubling the population every 50 years
Improved tech has helped, but that's just a bandaid. Try telling people they can't have all the babies they want, and see what kind of response you get.
