a drawing I like

The following panel is a sneak preview of a Space Kid page which is not due to go up on the website for a couple of weeks yet (click for a larger and sharper view!):

I am very happy with this panel. I'm actually proud of it. I don't usually feel that way about my own work.

I think the thing I find most satisfying about this one is how the lighting turned out, how it shows the forms with very little means. At first glance, it gives the impression that there are a variety of gray tones indicating shade, but in fact there are only two: a light gray and a dark one, that's all. This makes me feel like I have come close to the Roy Crane ideal of “doing more with less”. For once I came gratifyingly close to nailing what was in my mind's eye.

This is one of my favourite pieces out of anything I've ever drawn. There it is.

Light and Dark

Isn't that what it's all about?

You have every right to be proud.

I think it's the curtain shreds against the glove and then against the grays of the sleeve that really sell it. NICELY DONE.

Funny, I didn't notice that as a particularly significant element. Maybe I operate on instinct more than I realize? ;)
