Ode to La Northronne

canadian women are so beautiful in the summer.

they've sprung up around me like the sudden dandelions on a rolling field of grass. their charge permeates the air, revitalizing the nation. it's a glorious time to be a canuck with eyes.

a friend has told me that summer is homo sapiens' natural rutting season, so that new babies will come forth just as the following winter is drawing to a close. [hence our traditional time for weddings is june, so that everyone has their rutting licences in their wallets ready to go when the weather heats up.] so that it's the ladies' hormonal drive that makes them so attractive now, and my hormonal drive that makes me respond to it with renewed intensity. but i think there's more to it than that. it's not just the sudden visibility of skin after months of parkas....

to me it seems as though we've all been curled up inside ourselves all winter, huddled into cautious balls, peering out into the cold gloom, searching for a glimmer of hope. spring is our cautious unfurling, looking about, gingerly stepping out onto the thawing ground. but now is when we open up and spread our wings wide.

that's what i see in the women around me. they've opened up. they can finally fly. they're free and they love it. i think you only get that kind of raw wild exultation from people who endure a long, solid chill, who can feel the intense contrast of the heat and light and life blazing everywhere now, and who know how fleeting this time can be. which is why i'm willing to bet i would see the same vitality in the women of scandinavia if i went there now. i'm sure they would understand.

it's an inner beauty i see in all these people, a beauty of spirit unleashed. something that the unruffled hothouse beauty of california girls will never quite capture despite its own mythic purity. i'm seeing it everywhere these days, as if for the first time, and it delights me. i intend to wallow in this wonderful aliveness for every moment god cares to send it.

take a moment to be still and see if there's a vibe like that where you are. if you catch it, savour it and treasure it. life on this planet changes so fast...
