something I am grateful for today

Bananas! [I really like 'em! And I packed one in my lunch today.]

I remember my mother telling stories of her childhood, when tropical fruit was either a Christmas present or a miracle -- nothing like today. This reminds me that bananas are one of many exorbitant blessings in being alive here and now.

During WWII, the only people in Britain who received rations for bananas were babies and the elderly. Bananas were one of the few tropical fruits that traveled well before refrigerated containers.

Some stately homes grew hothouse pineapples though.

Extolling bananas

Actually, bananas are practically a wonder food.

They are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. They are a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Potassium and Manganese, and a very good source of Vitamin B6 and folate.

With 422 milligrams of potassium per banana, bananas have more potassium than most fruit and may help lower blood pressure levels. (Doctors often prescribe a banana a day to patients on blood pressure medication to replace lost Potassium.)

And don't forget the medicinal benefits of bananas if you have the dire rear. It's the first food in the BRAT diet. (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.)

BTW, I once wrote an article on bananas for Food-in-Guelph.com.

They're also excellent for placing in the automotive tailpipe of policemen who are trying to follow one.
