something I am grateful for today

Bananas! [I really like 'em! And I packed one in my lunch today.]

I remember my mother telling stories of her childhood, when tropical fruit was either a Christmas present or a miracle -- nothing like today. This reminds me that bananas are one of many exorbitant blessings in being alive here and now.

During WWII, the only people in Britain who received rations for bananas were babies and the elderly. Bananas were one of the few tropical fruits that traveled well before refrigerated containers.

Some stately homes grew hothouse pineapples though.
