is it just me?

Hidden tracks on CDs bug the hell outa me.

First time I can remember running across it was [famously] Nevermind. And even then I didn't find it particularly clever: just a novelty with an annoyance factor built in. But by now it's reached the point where the unoriginality of it is as annoying as the needing to wait for [or scan forward to] the hidden song. I'm almost glad when the hidden song is a waste of time cuz I know that, from then on, I can just turn the frickin CD off when I get to the silent bit and I'm not missing anything.

All I get from hidden tracks now is the knowledge that the band takes a puerile delight in inconveniencing me. Well big whoop, guys. Yeah, I'm so proud to be your fan and support you by buying your terribly-clever gag. I hope there are trip wires in the aisles when I go to your concert too.

Enough already. If you want me to hear the song, bring it to my table and set it in front of me, thank you. If you don't want me to hear it then leave it out. This is tiresome bullshit.

Rip CD. Listen to MP3. Delete empty tracks from audio library.

Problem solved?

Dammit, it's the principle of the thing, man!...

Hmmm.

You know, I dislike hip-hop so much that I wish all the tracks were hidden -- hidden so cleverly I could never find them, no matter how hard I looked.

For instance, if I bought a hip-hop CD and put it in my player, no sound would emerge. If I scanned the CD with a sector editor, I would perceive it to be formatted and empty of all content. Infinite detection along these lines would yield no noises of any kind.

As always, you are a man who knows his own mind. And as always, my hat's off to you.

Amen.
