read my lips

I only just noticed this today: when I feel like I am in a position of authority, I speak more clearly. When I feel outranked, I mumble. I don't do either one on purpose.

Huh.

I bet when you mumble you also look down and slouch slightly. I've just been reading about that.

Why yes. Yes I do.

This is near-universal human behavior, by default.

Politicans work this principle to their advantage. In debates, they deliberately speak clearly and confidently at all times, even when they know their own positions to be weak, illogical, or poorly researched... because they know that presentation will unconsciously be perceived as truth by the audience, which may not bother with research or analysis.

I thought it was just so people could hear them! :P
