I only just noticed this today: when I feel like I am in a position of authority, I speak more clearly. When I feel outranked, I mumble. I don't do either one on purpose.
This is near-universal human behavior, by default.
Politicans work this principle to their advantage. In debates, they deliberately speak clearly and confidently at all times, even when they know their own positions to be weak, illogical, or poorly researched... because they know that presentation will unconsciously be perceived as truth by the audience, which may not bother with research or analysis.
