wisdom of the elders
I realize that LJ is considered “old-fashioned, outmoded, uncool media”, so it seems like the perfect place to record my old-fashioned, outmoded, and uncool [not to mention hackneyed and “old-man”] thoughts:
Since hearing about the death of Whitney Houston, my mind keeps coming back to this:
beautiful, talented, famous, and rich... and she still wasn't happy

Imagine two things of the same class -- bands, restaurants, clothes, whatever.
One is older, retro, and enjoyed by fewer people (example: The Velvet Underground)
The other is super-current, super-hyped, and super-popular (example: Justin Bieber).
Which one is cooler?
beautiful, talented, famous, and rich... and she still wasn't happy
How do you know that?

I'm not Curmudge, but I assume he's drawing a conclusion based on her drug use. I don't know many happy crack addicts.
BTW, I almost emailed you last week. AKC was asking after you on the Zone mailing list.

Exactly, as an old guy would do!

I think she claimed she was too rich for crack -- that she was in fact a genteel cocaine addict who only snorted the very best.
But -- any way you slice it -- was she happy? That seems hard to assess without knowing her personally.

Now where did I put that crack pipe?
