something I am grateful for today
Jun. 30th, 2011 09:49 amThose times when it feels like “God is watching your back” even when things go wrong.
My current example: we were planning on driving down to Buffalo for a day trip of shopping. But before we could go, Sharon had an appointment to go to, and I had an errand to run while she was there. I ran my errand, came back to her appt location, and waited a bit. When she got back to the car, it suddenly wouldn't start.
I called CAA, they sent a guy out with a truck, he ran a diagnostic, and it turned out the battery had suddenly died. He had new ones on him, installed one right there, and then we were good to go. But by this time, we were off to such a late start that we postponed our Buffalo trip to the next day.
Now I don't enjoy the inconvenience and expense of replacing a car battery any more than the next guy, but: if it had to happen, it turns out that when and where it did was pretty much the best possible place.
- if the battery had died at home, Sharon would've missed her appointment
- if it had happened while I was off on my errand and I couldn't get back to Sharon, she'd have no company and nowhere to sit while she was waiting for the situation to get fixed
- if it had happened when we were in Buffalo (hundreds of miles from home), you can see how that would be markedly more inconvenient and probably way more expensive too
- it happened at a time when we had the day free and our schedule clear, so no real further disruption to our day
- the weather was perfect -- not like we were stuck in pouring rain or snow or whatnot, waiting for the truck to get there
So yeah, ideally it wouldn't have happened at all. But obviously it was gonna happen, in which case the way it happened pretty much all turned out for the best.
