johncomic: (Uncle Old Guy)
This gratitude business is giving me a strange perspective on things.

This morning I noticed a gas smell coming from our water heater and suspected a leak. So I called the gas company and they said “Will someone be there this morning for us to come check it out?” As it happens, I was off sick from work today so I said yes because, unlike most days, I would be home.

The gas guy arrived, determined that I was right, and shut off the gas to our water heater. I then had to call the water heater rental company to send someone out to fix it -- which they can't manage till tomorrow morning. So we had whatever hot water was still left in the tank to last us for the rest of today.

I could complain about the fact that the gas leak happened at all, or that we were without hot water today. Instead I feel grateful that I noticed it in the first place, and that I was sick today so that I could be home and the gas guy could quickly stop it from becoming a serious problem.

I understand that this wouldn't be the go-to position on this situation for a lot of people. I feel a little odd.
