something I am grateful for today
Jun. 30th, 2014 12:00 pmA week's vacation starting today [or last Friday night, depending how you wanna look at it]... can't say I've done so very much to earn it, but I have it now anyway and I intend to enjoy it!

This evening I took the kids to Dairy Queen and witnessed something that resonated with me:
a small young lady [possibly early twenties at most] who was the supervisor on duty at the time, dealing with not one but two very difficult customers in sequence. These far larger and older men were demanding things that were either beyond her authority or beyond human possibility, and they were by turns brusque, illogical, aggressive, and profane. She handled them with polite calm and firmness and stayed in charge of the situations at all times.
In between them, Hunter stepped up to apologize, as in “sorry that you had to go through that” -- she blushed and smiled and thanked him. And I couldn't help but think of what a thankless job this must be, and wondered how often she had to put up with such dung... and then the second guy descended on her...
Anyway, I felt for her, and her strength of character impressed me. I hope others in line were watching her and taking note of her example.
As we were finally on our way with our order, I managed to get her attention and just told her “You are my hero.”
She blushed and smiled and said thank you again.
