Well, I think in an era of Brokeback Mountain and Bridges of Madison County the idea that a couple can be meant by "the universe" to be together... regardless of all overwhelming, contrary factors... has tremendous popular support.

I'm with you on your take, though. In his shoes, I would see things differently.
