several of my traditional migraine triggers have been "failing" over these last few months - events which used to bring one on almost invariably, are now leaving me in peace

getting a little positive feedback on some spacecraft designs I roughed out... for me, the visual designs of my world-building are one of the most challenging areas of developing a new comic series, so it feels good to be told I'm on the right track

this book:

Famous Artists School Step By Step book

(recommended to me by Luis Escobar)

One of my numerous long-standing weaknesses as a cartoonist has been knowing how to draw animals. [I gather I am not alone: to me it seems surprisingly rare to see a comic artist who is truly good at drawing animals.] So I am finally taking some time to tackle it now, with the help of this resource. And even after only an hour spent working with this book, I have made some modest progress that I can actually feel -- I feel more hopeful about this area than I have for a long time. And, in an odd way, it feels good to be a student again...

dreaming about cartooning -- I can remember the large pages of bristol, the blue pencilling, the nib, some interesting inking ideas... it really felt like I had a story and I was doing finished work on it... which is something I miss

the work of Alex Toth, one of the greatest examples and teachers in the world of comic art. I have recently come across a couple of new volumes devoted to discussing the man and his work, and I devour such things avidly. The more I learn about him, the more I realize that I would likely have found dealing with him as a person quite trying [newest revelation: he was a Rush Limbaugh listener, which tells me much I'd rather not hear].... but also the more depth I find in his work to guide and inspire me.

the struggle to make sense of things -- more specifically, I am grateful that I have not abandoned my quest to make sense of things as much as I can, even in the face of things that have resisted sense for my entire life... learning "the wisdom to know the difference", perhaps....
