Earth's changing climate is harming crop diversity exactly where the security of global food production needs it most

A new study warns that if global warming surpasses 1.5°C, vast regions could lose critical crop diversity, heightening the risk to worldwide food security.

Researchers predict that about one-third of global food production may be in jeopardy due to higher temperatures, underscoring how climate change is expected to reshape agriculture, especially in vulnerable low-latitude countries.

You know what? I think they're barking up the wrong tree here. Humans have done FAR more damage to the foodstream than climate change has so far. I'm sure climate change will get around to that, but it's late to the party. Humans have already discarded many traditional crops because they don't lend themselves to commercial growing, drastically limiting the typical diet.

Today is sunny, less cold, with a light breeze.  This is a huge improvement.  :D

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I did a bit of work outdoors.

The mower has been picked up for its spring tuneup.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I picked up more junk from the parking lot.

I've seen a lot more sparrows and house finches, plus a fox squirrel.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I started trying to unearth the edge of the sidewalk bordering the parking lot on the south side.  It is exhausting, and must be done before the stump-grinder guy arrives early tomorrow. D:

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I hacked away at the east end of the sidewalk.  There are still several feet of the middle buried.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I continued hacking at the sidewalk edge.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I did more hacking at the sidewalk edge.  I think it's about as good as I can get it.  There's a big patch in the middle that I couldn't clear due to roots and brush, but at least the edge is more-or-less visible at both ends.

I've seen a male cardinal at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 3/18/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

The tax Man payeth

My federal tax refund arrived. Thank you, past me, for so generously over paying! Washington state has no state income tax as of right now so I'm all done for the year. Nice.

Today is the public Food and Beverage meeting. The blush is off the rose here. It's just old ladies bitching about the same shit over and over again. Half want a dining room dress code that makes them dress up for dinner and half do not and it will never happen so shut the fuck up. There are 3 women who do nothing but bitch about salt. The Food & Beverage director says they use a modest amount of salt in cooking. These three women was zero salt used (cause why have flavor?). So they bitch every month and the response is always the same. What is the grade of beef used? This question is asked and answered every month. In fact, all of the questions asked and answered every month are the same.

So, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Ha!

I'd really like to make my Goodwill trip today and I could do both but tomorrow's better for Goodwill.

I'm just cranky for no reason. And Biggie needs attention.

On my way back from the pool this morning, I spied this hilarious camouflage. I don't know these people. They moved in about a year ago with a teeny tiny adorable puppy.

Last night's post-supper "outside time" was all fun and games until the kiddo made a move. We were busy scouting a snow-free yard full of puddles when she dropped the request: she wanted to go sledding.

In the logic-defying brain of a three-year-old, snow is totally optional. She was convinced that grass sledding is a top-tier spring sport. We just stood there-no heart to explain the physics of a muddy lawn to someone who sees a luge track where we see a swamp.

Cuddle Party

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!

He's a small (11.8 pounds) mix of a dog. Very sweet, obviously used to being in someone's lap. But he got away and was found on the road. He'll be in a good home soon as he's neutered. Not mine but a good one. He's got a whole Fu Manchu / Yoda thing going on.

Windy as heck today. The kind of gusts that make you rethink every step you take outside. A lot of the usual low‑lying spots around town are flooded, but thankfully none of it slowed down my drive to work. Small victories.

We’re sitting right in the cold‑front side of the storm now, and you can feel the shift — winds swinging from the south around to the northwest, dragging that sharp edge of colder air behind them. It’s already getting that raw, unsettled feel.

Tomorrow’s shaping up to be downright chilly and frozen, so whatever isn’t iced over yet probably will be soon. Spring is taking its sweet time this year.

Today is cloudy and cold.  At least the howling wind stopped.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

Many of the plants that were sprouting have died from the hard freeze.  :/  Some still look fine though.  At least some of the sprouts in my jug and tub greenhouses have survived.

EDIT 3/17/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/17/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a large flock of sparrows and two male cardinals.

EDIT 3/17/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Poetry Fishbowl Open!

The Poetry Fishbowl is now CLOSED. Thank you for your time and attention. Please keep an eye on this page as I am still writing.

Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! Today's theme is "anything goes." I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.

Stuck for ideas? You can find prompts by ...
* browsing planned poems for Aquariana and the Maldives, The Big One, Broken Angels, Calliope and Vagary, Officer Pink and Turq, Pips and Joshua, or Shiv. (Some of these I've already done, so they're not all up to date, but others I haven't done yet.)
* browsing my Serial Poetry page for favorite threads or characters.
* browsing series with recently created landing pages: Artists of Destruction, Coracle Shores, Crystal Wood, Strike of the Thunderbirds, The Wandering (on the Serial Poetry page), Iron Horses, Peculiar Obligations, Not Quite Kansas.
* browsing my QUILTBAG list, Romantic Orientations in My Characters, Sexual Orientations in My Characters, Gender Identities in My Characters, or My Characters with Disabilities for favorites.
* naming a poetic form you'd like to see written.
* picking a prompt from my current bingo cards: National Crafting Month Bingo 3-1-26
* picking some from the Bingo Generator prompt lists.
* looking up fun tropes on Fanlore.
* choosing an unusual word.
* plugging a favorite topic into your search engine and choosing a picture that looks interesting.
* anything short. I could especially use short poems today as other prompts are likely to run long.
* standalone ideas, if you're a fan of that rather than series.

What Is a Poetry Fishbowl?

Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.

In this online version of a Poetry Fishbowl, I begin by setting a theme; today's theme is "anything goes." I invite people to suggest characters, settings, and other things of any type. Then I use those prompts as inspiration for writing poems.

It's house cleaner day!! And we need to put away the finished puzzle and start a new one. And I could use a small trip to Safeway or Trader Joe's or, actually, even Costco but the latter is probably a next week thing. I do have one Amazon return so I might do it + one of the other two this morning.

Nothing else much going on. Bonny is going to Palm whatever, CA for two weeks on Friday and she's all a dither with getting ready. Jim Across The Hall is getting more anxious more often but his care givers are, at the same time, getting better at taking care of him. Jim Down the Hall has gone on a road trip with his girl friend. And everyone else is pretty much the same as usual.

I am grateful for our weather which is now just normal - we'll be in 50's and 60's and the occasional 70 until the end of June. No tornadoes. Maybe a random wind storm but probably not. The evening news is all about the newsworthy weather across the country. I'm grateful to not be any part of that. I've actually been watching SKY news and some BBC (BBC news is more cumbersome to stream on my TV, hence, the Sky).

Plus I'm really grateful for no utility bills. Also no real estate tax. I just got my annual reminder that my real estate tax bill was ready and this year... NOT MY PROBLEM!!! Woot Woot! Not owning real estate is really wonderful.

Building on a $29,000 fully serviced lot in my post-industrial city reveals a brutal financial paradox fueling the housing crisis. While land is cheap, construction costs for a modest home now easily exceed $250,000 due to rising labour and material prices. The catch? Once finished, the home's appraised market value in these neighbourhoods often falls far below that total investment.

This "appraisal gap" stops development in its tracks. Banks won't mortgage what doesn't value, leaving vacant lots empty and the housing supply stagnant while demand—and rents—soar.

Meanwhile, current candidates for city council don't seem to get it. While they debate high-level Housing Action Plans and social housing targets, they ignore the ground-level math making private builds impossible. Until leadership addresses this valuation trap with concrete tools, these empty lots will remain scars on our streets.

Doom Bingo 2026

There were too many doom-and-gloom options for discussion today. I decided to finally create my doom bingo card for this year. I'll still try to use Moody Monday to limit my doomcasts to just one day of the week. Additionally, I'll try to avoid any of the topics on the Doom Bingo card. Instead, I'll just quietly catalog the news headlines of the year. I said last year that I would post a scorecard, judging the accuracy of my predictions. I didn't. I still don't have the mental bandwidth for that much serious evaluation. I still need to do my taxes too.

This doom card practice, however, I judge to be very effective at reducing the proliferation of news about the many terrible things happening everywhere. I left out of the list any mention of Minneapolis/Minnesota federal actions. I fully intend to discuss these very local events as they happen, on whatever day of the week they happen.

The Kotlin Crisis: Earth’s first mass extinction may have been far worse than previously believed

Fossils of the first sea creatures, long assumed to have vanished before a major mass extinction about 550 million years ago called the Kotlin Crisis, have now been found and are providing new details about that time period.

This discovery transforms what once looked like a routine species decline in Earth’s early history into what may be the first catastrophic extinction in animal history.

Second, actually, after the Great Farting Oxygen Event changed the atmosphere from reducing to oxydizing -- almost everything died, except a few archaea that found anoxic refuges and a few organisms that figured out how to use oxygen. But most people forget about that one.

The winter landscape is vanishing at an epic rate today. We’ve hit a messy "perfect storm" for rapid snowmelt: a heavy 50mm of rain paired with unseasonably warm 10°C temperatures. This combination is liquefying the snowpack faster than the ground can handle.

Unsurprisingly, the "usual suspects"—those low-lying roads and dips—are already flooding. My commute tomorrow is shaping up to be more of a boat trip than a drive. Between the standing water and inevitable detours, it’s going to be a slow, "fun" crawl.
