something I am grateful for today

Charlie Haden

Today I am listening to Charlie Haden. Always such a pleasure, regardless of which of his many styles he's playing in. Aside from his amazing technique, he has such taste and such a phenomenal tone, he's always so... enriching to listen to.

I'm reminded of a story I read yonks ago, where Haden was visited backstage by Charles Mingus. The part that sticks in my mind is when Mingus greets Haden by calling out “Hey, Bass!”


Hey: when Mingus nicknames you “Bass”, you know you're doing sumthin right. That's like Jimi Hendrix calling you “Git-tar Man!”
