This week is March Break for school kids up here. It isn't for us, in that we still hafta go to work every day. But, for me, being able to get ready in the mornin and not also hafta try and wake Hunter up, is almost as good as having the day off! ;P

First thing I heard when I went into *$ this mornin was I'm Movin' On by Hank Snow. Wow. I cannot hear Hank Snow without thinking of my dad.

When I was little, my dad played Hank Snow records what seemed like every Saturday. He was very into a few old-school country & western artists back then, but Hank Snow was his fave and the one we heard most often. I memorized I dunno how many of his songs on account of my dad.

Looking back now, I'm not quite sure what was up with my dad and his music. The way I remember it, he never listened to his records on Sundays, with the rare exception of some of his “church music”. And on weekdays when he came home from work, it was like he didn't feel like listening to music then at all. So Saturday was his music day.

As my brothers and I became teenagers, we gradually took over the stereo and the house was then filled with our music instead of his. And he never really tried to “take it back”.

I wonder if we made it too difficult for him to fit his music into his life, if he kinda gave up cuz his teenage sons pounded his love of music out of him.

I sure hope not.

PS: I also remember my dad telling me about how, when he was little, his dad [i.e., my grandpa] hated Hank Snow and wouldn't allow such sutff to be heard in his house. I figure my dad musta told himself “When I have kids, I won't treat them like that, I'll let them listen to what they like!” And hey: he did.
