something I am grateful for today
Mar. 16th, 2010 10:28 amThis mornin's theme on the *$ PA system was West Coast jazz: the kind of sutff that [primarily white] jazzbos were doing in California in the early and mid-50s. The Gerry Mulligan Quartet was one of the first and most archetypal groups to create that sound.
I dunno what exactly it is about West Coast that appeals to me as intensely as it does, but every so often I go thru a phase where I feel like it is perfect and who would want to play anything else? [A silly piece of me wishes I was born around 1930 and lived in LA and played alto sax so I could be a part of that scene!] West Coast has enjoyed its ups and downs with the critical establishment, but for me it's always made of win. It was a great kick to unexpectedly revisit that sound today, really gave me a boost.
