Blur's album Modern Life Is Rubbish, which was released on this date twenty years ago.

This was more Brit and more pop than any Britpop album had been to date -- a conscious effort to revive the values of classic latter-60s Kinks: smart, melodically creative, and informed with social commentary which was incisive yet affectionate and nostalgic. [And, more to the point, social commentary which was very explicitly directed toward contemporary British society.]  If any one thing can be said to define the artistic direction of Britpop, this would be it. MLIR gained Blur some modest but not inconsiderable chart success for the first time in quite a while, but still gave no clue to how massive they would become in the following year...
