I've always believed in the value of protest, and looked down on attempts to suppress legitimate protests, etc. ... but part of me is very put out by the anti-monarchy protesters that greeted William and Kate at their stops in Québec recently. They made me feel embarrassed on Canada's behalf.
I mean, yes they are members of the [shudder] royal family... but they're also a very nice, very young honeymooning couple on a goodwill mission. I feel like they themselves haven't done anything to deserve being subjected to this... any more than the people at funerals deserve being subjected to Westboro. Maybe this francophone example is less extreme than that, but it's similarly inappropriate.
I understand that their visit is an opportune moment for protesting the monarchy, vis-a-vis media coverage, but that doesn't make it right. Not this time, anyway.
