I hadn't either! And I've never reacted to them in real life... but when I got comprehensive allergy testing done, the doctor told me that, according to his results, roach was one of the things I reacted most strongly to.
As I recall, he said that in particular what I am sensitive to is having roaches die, dry up into dust, and then me inhaling that dust. Fortunately I have never lived in a place that had a lotta roaches in the walls, so I have never been exposed to said dust.
