So today I helped Paisley pick out her first MP3 player, looking for an ideal balance of storage, price, and [very important to her] "not ugly". Shoulda known it couldn't be that simple.

We get it home, prepare to load it up with tunes, and WTF -- you're supposed to plug it in and then a removable drive will show up amongst your other drives. It never happened -- no removable drive. Tried it over and over, different port, pushing the plug in tighter and wiggling, reading the instructions over, downloading a driver from the manufacturer's site and installing it... I don't see why this ain't workin.

Then Paisley reads the side of the box and says "Do we have all these minimum system requirements?"

Huh. Says it requires Windows 2000 or XP. We have Win98. Also says it requires USB 2.0 -- I'm not sure which USB we have, but suspect that it might not be 2.0... Huh again.

I simply had not checked before we bought it. It just plain never occurred to me that system requirements might be a problem. She got a camera for Christmas and it has no trouble using the USB... all we wanna do is load files thru a USB cable into another device -- I mean, Win95 could do that, so why the eff would I need 2000 to be able to do this?

Bottom line: after a tedious process involving Google leading me to some techie message boards, locating a particular generic USB driver, several re-starts, and fiddling with TweakUI to display the additional drives which I had previously rendered invisible *blush*... the thing is now running on our system, Paisley's tunes are in her player and all is well.

[both fists raised to the sky] I rock!!
