I woke up this mornin fresh from having a long dense dream -- it began with me watching BTO perform Roll On Down the Highway for a new recording and video, with vastly improved sound to their original recording. For the first time, I noticed that the lyrics of the verses were very deep... they were all about parents and children and religious faith: how we find faith, question it, lose it, re-examine it, all the various ways that man tries to interact with God and how that in turn affects his interactions with his fellow man. It was very well-thought-out and thought-provoking sutff, and I was amazed that in all these years I had never noticed how much social philosophy was packed into that song, it was sheer brilliance.

The lyrics to the chorus, however, were exactly the way I remembered them.

Anyway, they did an amazing job, the new version they got in the can sounded fantastic, and I was thrilled to be a witness to it. Then I ended up giving Randy Bachman a lift in my car to an appointment (to get his hair cut, I think)... and while we were in the car, the radio was playing this new recording they had just made, cuz it was digitally streamed to the radio stations in advance before the new CDs got pressed. And this was my chance to tell him how impressed I was with this song, and I remember telling him “I always loved it just because it sounds fantastic, it's one of the all-time great rockers”, but now I had learned about all this moving lyrical content as well... and he was very pleased and said that he was glad there were people who paid attention... I dropped him off at the hair salon, and we could hear that even store PA systems were playing it, everyone was getting into this tune and it looked set to become a much bigger hit this time around, and I found it all really exciting...

Then I woke up, and after a sec I was like “Wait a minute, I do know the lyrics to that song, and they aren't anything like that! What the what??!!...”
