Good examples.
Ben Caldwell is kinda my hero. He's one of that rare handful of cartoonists who, when I look at his work, it seems like the only right way to do this!
I scanned this pic from the bonus material in the back of the hardcover Dare Detectives #1. His work always looks very loose, which is where it derives a lot of its vitality. But looking at this model sheet, I was struck by the large number of very meticulous design choices he made while creating this character. This work is not at all "slapped together". I couldn't help but think about Fred Astaire's infamous example of "working hard to make it look effortless"...
