Good examples.

Ben Caldwell is kinda my hero. He's one of that rare handful of cartoonists who, when I look at his work, it seems like the only right way to do this!

I scanned this pic from the bonus material in the back of the hardcover Dare Detectives #1. His work always looks very loose, which is where it derives a lot of its vitality. But looking at this model sheet, I was struck by the large number of very meticulous design choices he made while creating this character. This work is not at all "slapped together". I couldn't help but think about Fred Astaire's infamous example of "working hard to make it look effortless"...

This is really interesting. I've always been pretty terrible at drawing, but it has only been recently that I realized that even the most talented artists pay attention to technical ideas like this. I've always imagined the artwork I've admired coming out of the artist's chosen tool fully formed, the way I see it.
