Our trip hit a small bump early on when the power went out in the plane twice before we were cleared to take off. Gotta admit, though, that I had more leg room on this flight than any other one I've ever been on:

And eventually we got power, as the nocturnal light show attested:

Still couldn't sleep during the overnight flight, though -- I can never sleep on planes.

Like last year, we could see buildings glittering in the morning sun as we came in over Manchester:

Unlike last year, I got to see a bit of Manchester itself during a break between trains:

The train from the airport to the city's main terminal was about the quietest train I have ever been on -- was shocked to discover it was not electric. (I don't know how else to explain its smooth near-silence.)

As always, I was enthralled by the views of the countryside during the train trip from Manchester to Halifax (our first stop this trip). Last year I discovered just how comforting and spiritual I find it to watch flocks of sheep on the hills and fields -- I was hoping to see grazing sheep again today but wasn't sure if it was too late in the season for them. I needn't have worried -- over here, the sheep are on display all year. Sorry, no chance to get a pic of them.

But I did see some interesting roofs during a stop at Rochdale:

And a gorgeous mossy roof at the stop at Hebden Bridge:

All in all, off to a fine peaceful bucolic beginning.
