something I am grateful for today

johncomicHad a chance this mornin to draw some more rough layouts for the pages of my new comic -- go me!
Haven't been getting much done on it in the evenings after work cuz my head's been kinda bad then, so it's nice to have found a timeslot where I could be productive today.
It's a little surprising how tough this process can be, though. What I'm doing here is planning out very roughly how each page and panel will look -- maybe like a blob in the upper left for a word balloon, a blob in the lower right for a face, and then a fluffy squiggle for a tree in the background, that sorta thing. And it's a little flustering that it doesn't always work. I jot a rough panel down, then realize it isn't clear, it doesn't work, and I do it over.
That's the whole point behind doing roughs in the first place, of course -- not everyone does them -- basically this is the point where I first exercise my visual and spatial imagination. If you think of drawing the actual finished page as “getting back in the saddle”, then doing the rough layouts is like “saddling the horse and leading it out of the stable”. And I'm reminded that I haven't brought this horse outa the stable in a few years and I feel kinda rusty.
I will say, though, that I think I notice it getting a touch easier as I'm going along from one page to the next, so I guess that's a good sign.
