something I am grateful for today
Oct. 5th, 2012 06:30 amBabies by Pulp, which was released as a single on this date in 1992.
[Hear it now!]
For me, Pulp were the Roxy Music of Britpop: more self-consciously arty and theatrical and “older-seeming” than most of their peers, with a kind of vaguely creepy elegance about them and their sound, and they rarely rocked very hard.
Babies wasn't Pulp's first single -- that was back in 1983. (Heck, Pulp formed back in 1978!) It wasn't even the first time they [modestly] hit the [indie labels] chart. But this was the first time they hit upon the sound and style and feel which would eventually lead them to Britpop prominence. When Pulp made it big in Britpop, it was by sounding like this. So this is the first “real” classic-Pulp song. But that prominence was still a long ways off. Nothing happened fast for this band.
