something I am grateful for today

The release of two Britpop landmarks on this date twenty years ago:  New Wave by The Auteurs, and Animal Nitrate by Suede.


After a number of singles, New Wave was the first Britpop album to be released -- among those who argue the case is Luke Haines himself, who didn't even like wearing the label! But he still figured he had earned it!

And Animal Nitrate was the first Britpop single to crack the UK Top Ten, thereby suggesting that there was the possibility of real success in these crazy new sounds. But even so, no one yet had any idea of just how manic this thing could get -- come back in five weeks and you'll see...
