but I'm not sure I've ever said anything about why this cover means so much to me.
Part of it is that it's the first release by The Ruling Class, the band that went on to become Sulk, my fave band. But the picture itself inspires me.
On the face of it, it's a picture of such a mundane place and thing. I dunno how many hundreds or thousands of these Transport for London shelters there are, and there's nothing really distinctive about this one. Its location is nothing special, hovering in a null zone between residential and industrial areas. There are some pretty trees behind the shelter, but that's about it. However...
the artistry of this photo adds so much. The warm glow of the sepia tones, the strange white lines created by passing traffic at long exposure, the unusual aerial angle of the view from a pedestrian footbridge.... they create a sense of soft otherworldiness that touches me. This photo conveys the idea that there is magic hidden within the mundane and everyday, and I find that a wonderful and profound thought.
